Mastercraftsman Gary

GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen design and make, as well as do restoration, conservation, and alteration work on antiques, interiors, furniture, household, commercial and industrial items, collectibles, instruments, clocks, frames, boxes, and artefacts.

Mastercraftsman Gary Olsson and his team of craftsmen and women use proven, time honoured, traditional, authentic methods to maximise value and longevity. This inspirational collective of mastery includes traditional tradesmen, artists, artisans, as well as restoration & conservation specialists. In this fast paced high tech world we live in, there are still some amazingly clever people who use the same authentic materials and hand tools as their predecessors from centuries ago. Things are built to last, to exacting standards, with focused attention to detail. All this is delivered with good, old fashioned service.

GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen hold affiliations and memberships with design, antique, arts & conservation associations, and several industry groups. This means you can have confidence in their reputation and superior standards, provided for your benefit.

Some claim to be experts at all things, however, this is neither realistic, nor likely. In times gone by, each skill was a completely separate trade taking 10 years to master. Today the best traditionally trained people often are self-employed.

At GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen, Gary Olsson is both a mastercraftsman and overseer. Gary Olsson is a highly reputable designer and timber, veneer, gold and leather specialist. For several decades, renowned for his craftsmanship, Gary is consistently commissioned as entrusted designer and bespoke maker, restorer and conservator of interior features, cabinetry, furniture and household, commercial, rural and industrial objects. Additionally, as cabinetmaker, furniture maker, chair maker, joiner, traditional French polisher, marqueteur, parqueteur, ebeniste’, gilding restorer, glass and mirror designer and restorer, leather, baise and fabric gilder, heavy grade leather upholsterer, embossed inlay and decorative lining craftsman, box and carry case restorer, gesso and composition ornamentation casting, carver and restorer, wood carver, wood turner, minor works blacksmith, and small scale masonry restorer. In recent decades, to fill the skill gap in increasingly rare allied trades and technical professions he has broadened his own skill base to include cane and wicker work, antique lock smithing, vintage restorer of devices, instruments, equipment and machinery, metal polisher and faux finisher, metal worker and restorer.

Our People

However, no man is an island. Gary regularly collaborates with barometer technicians, horologists (time piece technicians), and a variety of instrument technicians specialising in restoration of music boxes, gramophones, radiograms, stereos, and more challenging aspects of scientific and vintage instrumentation. All are directed to deal directly with the client on co-operative projects.

On behalf of his clientele, Gary directly engages the very best trade and craft people. The team includes additional, traditional and lacquer French polishers, a traditional upholsterer, a handweaver, a pinstriper and old fashioned sign writer, specialty glass artisans, a leadlight and stained glass craftsman, glazing manufacturers, jewellers, an enamel restorer, a porcelain restorer, photo, portrait and art restorers, an electrician, a micro engineer, a welder, metal caster, and a wheelwright.

He is heavily reliant on his extensive sourcing network of private collectors and enthusiasts, as well as small and large commercial businesses. They are local, national and international purveyors of rare and premium quality materials used on bespoke and restoration projects.

The depth of knowledge and collective experience of this collaborative group of masters and artisans from diverse, yet allied specialisations is critically beneficial for the investing owner of items commissioned. This ensures authentic and long lasting creations, restorations and conservations.

Gary Olsson extends respect and gratitude to suppliers and artisans adhering to traditional values in their chosen careers. Gary’s classical and traditional training and accompanying diverse knowledge and skill base are elaborately enhanced by his collaborative network of specialist colleagues. It is key to the long term success of GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen.

With more than 35 years to his credit, conducting business in this old fashioned manner, GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen are recognised locally and nationally, as a supremely competent, one stop shop. Gary Olsson takes full responsibility for all commissions. This isn’t as onerous as it sounds, because such highly talented people are not inclined to let anyone down. It is a matter of professional pride. Gary Olsson is the head tradesman who personally meets with you to discuss, then manage, your particular project. His unified team then collaborates to get the best end result in a timely fashion. Thus, clients are able to gain access to the talents of the very best in each field. It is a modern day network equivalent to the large traditional workshops of bygone eras. Our aim is to maximise value and longevity. This means doing the right thing by the item, as well as maximising the value of your investment.
