GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen offer a complete custom design service and are Approved Service Providers
with AAADA, and private practice conservators listed with the AICCM for repair, restoration & conservation.
Private clients and collectors commission new clocks, and bring us their old antique and heirloom clocks, barometers and music boxes for correct traditional repair, restoration and conservation. We are also able to provide parts, and undertake micro-engineering tasks.
Our highly skilled craftsmen and women, repair, restore and conserve both clock works and clock cases, even pocket watch stands.

Conservation, restoration and repair of cases – clock, barometer and music box.
GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen have expertise in all aspects of timber, veneer and inlay repair, restoration and conservation, and can carve and turn missing features. Hinges and knobs can be repaired or replaced, and we retain a stock of authentic antique and vintage glass to replace broken panes. Traditional hand French polishing is usually recommended in pure shellac which has proven its worth over centuries. Gilding, Hand painted finishes and marbling can all be restored, and our jewellers, micro-engineers, gold & silversmiths can work absolute miracles on your treasured piece.
Service for the works of your treasured timepiece:
- All clocks are prone to wear and occasional damage. They may get in such a state that they no longer are able to run freely. Our team of master craftsmen and horologists ensure both the case and the works are maintained, repaired, restored or conserved to exacting standards. We offer free no obligation quotations. Accidents and disasters can happen too, so we also provide insurance quotations.
- We provide estimates from photos if desired, however after a full workshop inspection we can provide a firm quote.
- Years of use may result in the accumulation of grime, dust and dried oil. These are all painstakingly removed, freeing up mechanisms once again.
- Broken or worn parts are repaired and missing and weakened parts (eg springs) are replaced. For valuable antique clocks we can repair parts rather than replacing with reproduction parts. For parts no longer available, we can micro engineer them.
- All clocks are tested and timed following repairs to ensure accurate timekeeping, striking and chiming. Following our workshop test, clocks may be installed, then rechecked by our horologist.
- We can help with care of antique longcase clocks (or grandfather clocks), bracket clocks, carriage clocks, striking and repeating carriage clocks, French mantle clocks, and of course, lantern clocks.
Service for barometers:
- Complete restoration to get it as close as possible to the original condition
- Partial restoration to have it look old, yet be in good working order
- Restoration of the dial
- Recalibration
- Replace and refill mercury J tube
- Clean and service
- Re-engineer or supply reproduction parts - works, dial, hands, glass and bezel
- Make and replace the transportation stopper which often has been lost over the years.
Music box works service:
- Repair and replacement of pins or tooth tips
- Repair or replacement of missing or damaged dampeners
- Repair governors
- Repair of damaged cylinders
- Repair of worn combs
Famous History in Clocks Royale
Elvin Harvey, of Harvey Bros, Woolloongabba, son of internationally renown furniture maker, wood carver and sculptor, LJ Harvey, was commissioned by the Queensland Government to make an ornately carved long case clock as a gift for the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Gary Olsson was honoured to be a fully qualified cabinet maker working on the team, which had Elvin, Gary’s teacher, as designer and principal master carver. Unlike a multitude of royal gifts, we understand that the clock has been retained – an honour to Queensland.
